The name of Sonia Rykiel is one that is synonymous with daring modern elegance and style. Making her name in the boom of 1960s fashion and artistry, Rykiel’s new knitwear and design techniques led to her being dubbed ‘the Queen of knits’. Her label was founded in 1968 following the launch of her first shop in Paris.
It was in 1962 that Rykiel landed on the idea that would really make her name. During her pregnancy she worked with an Italian clothing manufacturer to create a dress and top. Featuring loosely cut arm holes and a shaped body main, the so-called ‘poor boy sweater’ was fashioned.
The sweater was a huge success, gaining strong publicity on the cover of Elle Magazine in France. It’s also said that the Hollywood actor Audrey Hepburn purchased 14 of the sweater in different colours. Rykiel also introduced the application of seams on the outside of garments, slogans on tops, and unfinished hems.
