It’s pretty safe to say that it’s not most people’s idea of fun to stay overnight in a prison. However, a quick look at the Het Arresthuis hotel in Roermond, Holland might just change their minds! Well, ok it is a former prison, but something of the old uniform and austerity remains.
The prison closed its doors in 2007 after nearly 150 years in use as a jail. After Dutch hotel group Van der Valk‘s clean up operation, a total of 105 prisoner cells have been transformed into 40 rooms and suites. These open out onto a lounge in the old prison hallway.
In an acknowledgement of the site’s past, the four luxury suites are named the Jailer, the Lawyer, the Judge and the Director. The former courtyard is now a cafe and terrace lined by olive trees. Opening in Spring 2011, The Het Arresthuis hotel looks like it carries a sentence of high class rest and relaxation!
