Rugs benefit greatly from regular cleaning and good maintenance. Here’s five top tips to prolong the lifespan of your rug and keep it looking clean and fresh:
Sweep rugs at least once a week to get rid of any loose dirt and grit and give it a good vacuum. However do not vacuum excessively especially on rugs that have longer or looser pile, as this may damage the rug.
For best results, beat the rug on each side outdoors in dry weather, and then sweep or lightly vacuum. Occasional airing outside and a gentle shake upside down is also a great way to revitalise the rug pile, get rid of loose dirt and stale odours.
Spills & Stains
In the event of a spillage, blot the area preferably with a dry cloth or paper towel. If possible, avoid rubbing the surface pile of the rug. For more persistent stains use a cleaning solution, available from high street shops, but always check that it is compatible with your rug. If unsure do a spot test on a small area of the rug, alternatively refer to the care label on the rug or consult with the manufacturer.
Wear & Tear
To avoid specific sections of the rug being worn through continual heavy traffic or direct exposure to sunlight, lift and rotate your rug at regular intervals to equalize the damaging effects.
Revive rug pile that has been crushed by heavy furniture by brushing the indented area with a soft brush. Moisten with a spray bottle, and brush again. To reduce this damage, move furniture around from time to time and use furniture castors.
